Motivate me!!??

I have been desperately trying to get back into shape after my very long recovery from major illnesses after Caitlyn was born. I actually started to run last summer and did it for a while, and lost some weight while doing it. But then we moved to Upstate NY in winter!! After the long break, let's just say, my same ol' attitude about running is back. I only run when chased! Karate has been fantastic, but it's not enough, at only 3 days/wk for 45 min. The roads out here are great, little traffic, beautiful scenery, and a little hilly (which isn't great for a beginner runner). But, I just can't seem to make myself do it! There is a 5k race in Sept, which seems really far off, and such a short distance. i cannot find anymore races around here, was hoping for a 10k. Although, that sounds like soooooooo much running! Oh yeah, not to mention the really scarey Rotty that lives about 5 houses down! He's one scarey, and BIG dog!! He lives down the flat road, which forces me to run down the other hilly road. So, there's my babble and whining about running and fitness. My dear running friends, kick my cyber bum and get me motivated to run!!!

Hi Wendy!

I haven't run in a long, long time. I do, however, occasionally jog on my mini trampoline and you know what? I always feel better when I've done it for a few days - more energy, better attitude... does that help? =)

I always find that I am more motivated when I have a specific plan that I am following. I like using Hal Higdon's plans - have you tried them? I used his for the 1/2 and the 10K (www.halhigdon.com) I've never regretted a run, but I've certainly regretted not running. It gives me energy, helps my body function better, keeps my weight stable.

There's a great book by George MacDonald called The Resilient Life that I read last summer. He uses a lot of running analogies because he was a runner in high school. It was motivating for me while I was training. Here's one of the quotes I wrote down:

When I push my body for an extended time, the other pieces of who I am seem to awaken to the fact that I really am the boss, and that my entire being is expected to submit to the convictions and intentions I have set in place for myself.

It's true - pushing myself in running (and I still don't really LOVE running) helps me be disciplined in all areas of my life. How's that for motivation? :) You can do it Wend!

I hear ya Wendy! I've been wanting to get on my road bike for a while now and Chris actually did 61 miles around Oneida lake the other day. Maybe we can have boys watch the kids one day while we go jogging or road biking, if you have one! We would love to see you guys soon :)

Okay, I'll motivate your cyberbum Wendy!! You can DOOOOOO-IT!! Okay that was lame. I'm in a running funk too, and need to get back into it as well. So I am training for a marathon in Jan. So I think you have the right approach, sign up for a race, then you kinda have to do it, and then take it easy at the beginning. That's key, don't over do it at first. Do a few run-walk-run runs and then gradually decrease the walk and increase the run...take it at your own speed, don't go too fast at first, work up to it. And be patient and forgiving of yourself if you have to miss a day, I know that will be hard for you :) I like Gina's quote-thanks Gina!! I wish you lived closer, I need a running partner/motivator..Wish you and gina both lived here, where you die of heat exhaustion just looking out at your baking drive way, ahhh 107 degrees is awesome! (42 C for you Gina :) I will pray that God will blow some serious wind towards your back and blow you out the door :)

Thanks for the motivation guys!! Running on the trampoline, now that sounds fun! We are actually thinking of putting an inground trampoline this month-super fun!

Gina, I love that quote! Also, I remember looking at Hal Higon's website before, wery similar to Runner'sworld.com for the schedule.

Michelle, I love to bike!! I have Steve's old bike, but it's a mountain bike. But we could try at least. 61 miles is a bit much though, lets try for a little less distnace. :-) Email, we need to get the fsmilies together again!

Linds, your the best. Wow, another Marathon! You are my running hero! So, I guess I really am going to find a 10k and just do it. Problem is, you can't run here for so many of the months. maybe there will be one in the fall somewhere.

I also just realized, I can't start running now-pointless. Am having, ahem, surgery, in a few weeks time. After the surgery there is no activity what so ever for 3 weeks! Why torture myself with running now if I just havre to stop!? Mis August though! Will you guys email me and make me do it!! :-)

Wend, I wondered about that, ahem, surgery and if you should be running at all right now. ;) That's why I didn't try to motivate you. :) You'll get back into it. Course then it'll be winter...you could always come visit me and run here. :) On the beach. In the winter that is...otherwise you'd die.

Wait a minute Wendy, running is never pointless! :) Just because you'd have a hiccup in training for something doesn't mean your body wouldn't benefit from running until your surgery. Try just having an easy goal like going out for 1/2 hour and doing a run/walk combination. You'll still feel better even if you aren't sticking to a training schedule.

And you'd be surprised how far into winter you can run. I thought I wouldn't be able to run at all in Minnesota last winter, but it actually feels a lot better to run when it's 40 degrees out than when it's 70. You just have to have different clothes (and no snow on the ground or it's gross!). :)

Cara, thanks for thinking of it. I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or not.
Gina, now that's a gooooood pep talk!! I haven't made up my mind yet. Too busy to run this week anyway, majorly busy with a day camp kindof thing with the homeschool co-op. Plus karate and taking care of my friend with Lyme disease. But, after this week, and my appt to discuss the surgery and figuring out the date, I will decide. Plus we travel next week. OY, tired just thinking about it! I was thinking if I started now, I would be just getting over the mental hurdle of it all and then have to stop and restart that torture again. I really really hate running. Trying to reset my thinking, but doing it twice is what i was thinking would be really difficult. Yeah, I supppose running in the 40 degree weather is way better than 80 degrees! Never thought it possible to run in the winter. But there are at least 3 mo where it's impossible, like 20 degrees to 0 degrees with major wionds, so no running then for sure!!! Will see how it goes, Steve can get me a membership to a gym for $3/wk if I need to, but one step at a time.......

Thanks!!!

I think running is about 90% mental! Most days I wake up and think, "I don't want to run" but I when I make myself, it's such a great feeling of accomplishment.

$3 a week gym membership?!? That's crazy. You have to take that! Even if you go once a month it's worth it. You can't even get that kind of deal in China! :)

You can DOOOO IT Wendy!!! I know you can, and carry a stick with you when you run for that rotty, or a thing of mace...yes definately need mace :) wish i wa there, i'd run with you and get you going :) start out slow, work up to those distances, don't tackle it all at once. And dont forget to STRETCH!!! oh and get an ipod and listen to something super fun while you run, that helps me..i'll give you my playlist if you want it :) good for you for going for it!!
